View Full Version : Success!! CM "No Devices Found" Solved!!

To Steph and others who have suffered with the "XP SP2 Bug", symptom thereof the dreaded "No Devices Found" message in Control Manager V-xx, my session with Michael directing solved the problem.
The solution (on my machine at least):
1) Unplug all CH Controllers
2) Via REGEDIT, go to HK_Local_Machine/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/ENUM--
Delete the HID and USB folders
3) Via Device Manager, uninstall all entries (chipset, hubs, etc.) under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers AND all entries under Human Interface Devices
4) Re-boot and let XP re-discover and as a consequence re-install the USB Controllers, Root Hubs, etc.
5) Re-connect each CH controller, verifying each in the Game Controllers applet as the correct entry, ALL CAPS, and test input via the Properties tab
6) Run the Control Manager (I installed 3.5 prior to doing this as I had uninstalled 3.0 waiting to connect with Michael. You may want to verify that you do not have to re-install the CM w/ Michael or just bite the bullet and uninstall/reinstall anyway)
7) After running the CM, verify the CH controllers in the Game Controllers applet as being mixed upper/lower case as listed, indicating the CM did its thing and installed the CH drivers for your devices.
8) Enjoy your re-birth, I suggest by attacking any conveyance within which Gates may be riding.
I'm sure that Michael may edit this or post his own version. As I mentioned, he directed, I just fingered and plugged. He certainly deserves the Kudos he gets and I'll add mine for his attention and patience.
Good Luck to those who may attempt the surgery suggested in this thread. Relatively painless and much less agony than a reformat and fresh install of XP.
Thanks again Michael.

Congratulations.
Will try when I get home.
Just one set of questions SJ,
When you say that the "CH PRO THROTTLE" in Control Panel/Game controllers becomes mixed Upper and lower case, is that before or after you have tried calibrtaing in CH Control Manager? In other words, at step 6 did you try calibration? And you didn't get the "There are no active devices message"? Or did you see the mixed upper/lower case entry in Game Controllers BEFORE you tried to calibrate in CH CM?
Hope I'm making my question clear..........

Steph,
After the CM runs (and the indication of all the device discoveries/driver installs that will be generated as a result of the cm running (or installing in my case)), the entries in the Game Controller applet will show as mixed case. This is the indication that the drivers successfully installed. You shoud be good to go at that point.
I did not see any indication of "no active devices" during the process.
I think I remember that if CM does not "find" CH devices via query to XP, he will generate the "no active devices" message. The problem stems from the application of SP2, wherein Microsoft did not carry over any unsigned driver and/or did not update the registry appropriately based upon the action they did take. Effect was to leave no way for CM to detect the native device entry.

So did you have CM installed when you did the registry cleanup and redetect, or did you install it afterwards?
And when you removed the HID and USB devices in the Device Manager, did you remove the CH Root, Aux1 and Aux2 as well?

I uninstalled CM prior to the exercise with Michael. I reinstalled CM 3.5 after operating on the registry and USB entries in the Device Manager.
In the device manager, I uninstalled ALL entries under Universal Serial Bus Controllers (the category entry) and ALL entries under Human Interface Devices (category entry).

I didn't have any "CH" entries under any category in the device manager. The only place the CH entries appeared prior to the exercise was in the Game Controller applet and they disappeared when I unplugged all three controllers prior to beginning the exercise with Michael.
My advice would be to unplug all usb devices, including the CH controllers, and uninstall CM, reboot and then begin the process I covered in my original post.

When you install the CH Control Manager, the computer finds a Root Device, Aux1 and Aux2, and a HID keyboard and mouse.
The Root, Aux1 and Aux2 appear in device manager under a "CH Products" category
Anyway, let me give it a try.....

That's right but remember I had uninstalled CM prior to the exercise and unplugged the devices.
Because of that, I had no "ch" entries in the Device Manager to deal with.
My OPINION, not DIRECTION, is to start where I started, i.e., CM uninstalled and the devices unplugged (gone from the system).
Good Luck.

A BIG THANKS TO MICHAEL AND MY OLD MATE SMILINJACK!!!!!!!!
Followed the instructions and I'm in business. CH Manager now sees the Pro Throttle!
Only wrinkle I had was deleting the HID and USB keys in the registry - it wouldn't let me do it until I fiddled with the permissions, but everything is copacetic now.
A big thanks to Michael and the excellent CH customer support for solving a MICROSOFT problem!!!!

I couldn't delete either file at first. Then I changed permissions to allow "full control." Then it allowed me to delete the HID folder, but still cannot delete the USB folder in RegEdit.
Can you elaborate on how you did this?

You need to R click the USB folder, choose "permissions" then add... your username, assuming you have admin priveliges. Then make sure your username has all the checkboxes ticked and you should be good to go.
Any probs, let me know and I'll post screenshots......

Thanks Steph. I did that, giving myself full control, but no luck deleting the USB folder. It refuses to llet me delete it for some reason. Could it have something to do with my USB mouse being in use when I try to delete the USB folder?

Don't think so, but I did unplug all USB devices (didn't uninstall the software).
My Permisions looked like this when I couldn't delete the keys - stel1.jpg

Then I clicked "Add..." and typed "Administrators"
There is only one administrator on my machine, so it appended my name automagically
Then I was able to check the full control box and delete the key....... see stel2.jpg

Have you tried working from the bottom up, removing the subkeys first? It seems to me I recall that under XP you can't remove a key until you remove it's subkeys.

I also had to fiddle with the permissions, ended up having to change all the subkeys and primary key before XP let me delete same. I held off including that tidbit in the posting because I thought the description of the fix was already too long/somewhat confusing as it was.

Worked like a charm. Except for the part where I was deleting all my usb stuff and my cursor stopped moving. I forgot I just bought a new Logitech laser mouse with just a straight USB connector. So I did not get to finish deleting everything. But I rebooted and everything worked just fine. So I guess the few things I never got rid of did not matter.

Hi Peter,
You'd really need to talk to Michael at CH, I'm not at the factory. He's usually around until 4PM Pacific Standard Time (GMT -8.00), I think you're 17 or 18 hours ahead of that. so you could probably get through to him around 9 or 10 AM your time. You might email him first and see about setting it up.
Before you do that, though, here's something you might want to try. The only change between V3.5 and V3.6 is in the GUI, CHCtlMgr.exe. If you install 3.6, look in the Control Manager folder, usually:
\Program Files\CH Products\Control Manager
and you should find CHCtlMgr.exe there (even if Windows can't find the devices). Copy that file out to some other location temporarily. Restore V3.5 like you've been doing, then copy the V3.6 CHCtlMgr.exe file back into the CM folder to replace the 3.5 version. You'll end in exactly the same situation as you would if the 3.6 install had worked, and since your devices are working under 3.5 they'll still be working under 3.6. There's no need to calibrate, or even restart the machine. Just replace the file and go.
Best regards,
- Bob

Can some one please help me and explain to me how to fix this problem, i did not understant what to delete and where are the files, i don't want to delete anything important from my PC. I don't understand very well about computers and i don't understand why i need to know so much about software when all i want to do is fly with my 360$ worth CH HOTAS (stick+throttle+pedals)? Don't i and all other CH customers deserve a patch or a new control manager that will work? I know that some of you may laugh and say "it's so easy to fix, all you need to do is..." well to me it's like chinese. All i know is that i'm not flying three days already and the way things are going i will probably will not be flying with my CH HOTAS for the next three months. I realy don't want to go back to my X-45, i am already deeply in love with my CH HOTAS. Please help!

It's not us guy :(
It is Service Pack 2 from Microshaft. They did it and it would have been nice if they warned you but... they didn't. It would have been nice if they foudn a fix for this when so many people had this problem (not just CH owners and not just game controllers) but... they didn't.
If the instructions above are a little too high speed low drag for you then call CH's Tech Support....

I read through this thread and I think I understand everything I need to do but I have little confidence in my own ability to 'fix things'. When it comes to computers I always seem to find a way top break things.
So to help my confidence I will run through my problem and hopefully some one can confirm what its is I need to do to get things working again...
In preparation to install the CM 4.0 I unplugged the controllers (Pro-throttle, Pro-Pedals, Fighterstick all USB), ran CH delete then un-installed CM 3.5.
I re-booted, installed CM 4.0, rebooted again.
I then began plugging in the controllers 1 at a time. I first plugged in the Pro-Throttle and everything went fine. The Hardware Wizard started and the drivers detected and installed (controller and HID).
I then plugged in the Pro-Pedals and waited for the Hardware Wizard, nothing happened. I went into 'Control Pane'l and checked both under "Game Controllers" where 'CH PRO- PEDALS USB' was listed in caps and in the' Device Manager' where nothing is listed under CH Products. Under 'Human Interface Devices' there is/was a second entry. This second entry dissappears when I unplug / remove the PEDALS.
I fiddled around removing the controllers with CH delete, rebooting and even re-installing CM 4 running the 'New Hardware Wizard' etc...
I tried updating the driver for the the listing under HID and still no go.
I then moved on to the Fighterstick (USB) and ran into the same thing.
Here are some images (click on thumbnail):

Do I delete the entire HID and USB folders? What about other USB devices I have installed? Should I un-install / unplug those as well?
Will following the instructions in this thread get me fixed up?
Is there anyhting I should be aware that might cause me to run into other issues?

I went ahead and followed the instructions in the first post.
I first did a reg export / backup and turned on sytem restore and created a restore point. To my surprise everything worked exactly as written above.
It was completely 'painless' and everything works fine.
Thank you for this thread.

Hi all,
I had the fighterstick and the CM4.0 installed before I got the rudder paddles.
All the instructions above were followed obediently, but it didn't work for me  :
I could not delete HID/USB reg folders completely. There was a chproducts folder in my control panel /system/hardware that I also tried deleting after several unsuccessful runs of described procedure. This let me reinstall cm40 (again) completely including great long new hid installation messages that were not appearing before deinstalling chproducts, but still no luck. No COMBINED entry or alternate low/high case letters in the system/game controller list.
I went into CM through all wizard options for just one device, did download button click successfully... and no changed game controller entries appeared in the control panel at all.
The "calibrate" option in CM is not accessible, just switches to xp game controller calibration but calibrating the paddles in control panel\game controllers does not work because it needs a button to confirm and the rudder paddles have only axes.
In other words, I really really need someone to help me out.
Please someone totally clever make a start to better humankind !
Thanks,
maddirk
P.S.: I will not reinstall all of XP because everything else is just so. :salute:
P.P.S.: Although I do get funny messages that I should be having Admin rights... but I do and have checked so in the control panel/users twice thorougly :(

ta, mate
you can call me red baron now....
To Steph and others who have suffered with the "XP SP2 Bug", symptom thereof the dreaded "No Devices Found" message in Control Manager V-xx, my session with Michael directing solved the problem.
The solution (on my machine at least):
1) Unplug all CH Controllers
2) Via REGEDIT, go to HK_Local_Machine/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/ENUM--
Delete the HID and USB folders
Cant delete folders. ;)
My PC is Vista 32 bit.
What should I do next?
Thanks !

Hi jlau,
You need to right-click the folder and grant full permissions to everyone to delete the folders, something new with Vista. If this is a new installation of the CM though, open the CM GUI first and click the Test/Calibrate button. Down in the lower-left corner is a button labelled "Rescan". Click that and see if you get New Hardware dialogs and the devices reinstall. I don't know for sure, but I've never heard of the XP2 bug in Vista.
OTOH, any new install is subject ot rearrangement of the controllers after the first Windows restart. If you plugged the controllers in for the first time and then installed without restarting Windows first, then the "No Active Devices" messages is fairly common. The installer put the controllers under the CM drivers, the restart moves the controllers around (logically speaking) and so they aren't the ones that the CM saw initially (again, logically speaking). The rescan asks Vista to run through all the devices and move any of the CH controllers it finds that are running under the standard Windows drivers to run under the CM drivers again.
If it finds any, you'll probably get New Hardware messages. It may ask you to insert the manufacturers disk. DON'T DO IT! It's really looking for the Windows disk, the Control Manager installer should only be run the first time, after that it's looking for Windows files that either weren't installed initially, probably because there was no hardware that required them, or it's found drivers that aren't those that came with the Vista install. This happens a lot with DirectX stuff. Usually what will happen is you'll put the disk in and it will tell you there a newer version already on the HD and suggest you keep it. If you ever get that message, you should always keep the newer file rather than having Windows reload the earlier file from the installation CD. Loading the earlier file will almost certainly cause problems.
Best regards,
- Bob
