View Full Version : SP2 "No active devices" fix: Opinions please

Hey guys. As you might have noticed from my posts below, I uninstalled CM 3.0 after discovering that my Fighterstick was not being recognised in the CM after SP2.

I now get the "No active devices" error message after installing CM 3.5 with all the right protocols observed re. unplugging devices, rebooting etc. Windows recognises both of the devices (they are listed in upper case in the Settings/Game devices screen).

I don't mean to be redundant as I know there is a thread for fixing this issue (although the error message described is differently worded, is that significant?) but I wonder if I could solicit your opinions on the following:

- I'm not very active in any sim right now and would wait for a CH patch rather than risk borking my Registry; the potential for disaster here seems huge. Does anyone know if there may be a patch for this issue?
- I'm not confident enough of my abilities to embark on this registry fix myself; how many of you have been talked through it by the invaluable Michael of CH and what is the success rate?
- Does the fix involve unplugging and re-recognising all USB devices? I have about ten of them, including a trouble-free powered USB 2.0 hub that runs my mouse, ProThrottle, TrackIR and scanner without any problem. I'm leery about tempting fate here.

Again, I do not want to sound redundant and neither am I intending to second-guess the collective wisdom of this excellent community in posting the fix. It's a little daunting, though, and, as I say, if I were still in my "LOMAC every day" phase I'd be doing it right now. However, the risk of lobotomising my system is so daunting that I'm after some analysis of risk/reward from those who know more about this stuff than I do.

Many thanks.

I have a perfect record with the registry edit. :)

Everybody goes away fixed and happy.

Thank you Michael. Remember when you talked me through a previous registry edit after I received mis-labelled Win 98 software with my CH gear and installed it in XP? I'll call you next week to sort this out. Many thanks and welcome back.

Well, I could wish I lived in the States so that I could put through a call to Mike. Unfortunately I ain't, but I am left with "no active devices" after stupidly downloading CM3.5. Total cr@pola....I see little choice but a full format and fortunately I have a slipstreamed CD of XP&SP1, but I could really do without the hassle. Grrrr.

Brando, don't do it!

As in the relevant thread:
1) Unplug all CH Controllers
2) Via REGEDIT, go to HK_Local_Machine/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/ENUM--
Delete the HID and USB folders
3) Via Device Manager, uninstall all entries (chipset, hubs, etc.) under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers AND all entries under Human Interface Devices
4) Re-boot and let XP re-discover and as a consequence re-install the USB Controllers, Root Hubs, etc.
5) Re-connect each CH controller, verifying each in the Game Controllers applet as the correct entry, ALL CAPS, and test input via the Properties tab
6) Run the Control Manager (I installed 3.5 prior to doing this as I had uninstalled 3.0 waiting to connect with Michael. You may want to verify that you do not have to re-install the CM w/ Michael or just bite the bullet and uninstall/reinstall anyway)
7) After running the CM, verify the CH controllers in the Game Controllers applet as being mixed upper/lower case as listed, indicating the CM did its thing and installed the CH drivers for your devices.
8) Enjoy your re-birth, I suggest by attacking any conveyance within which Gates may be riding.

It works. Do it!

:salute:

Well, I made it through......despite being unable to delete all of the suggested reg. entries....

In fact it was enough to just delete the CH entries in the HK_Local_Machine/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/ENUM category. After that I got my devices recognised :) I had to search a fair bit for those entries....and I found it was best to have removed Control Manager beforehand.

It was all a bit trial & error, so please don't anyone think I had a method! :D
But I had some real good help & encouragement....thank you, Steph B)
