Sometimes if not used for a short period of time Windows will switch off USB devices as part of it's power saving mode.
**IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT CHANGING SYSTEM SETTINGS PLEASE CONSULT A COMPUTER SPECIALIST**
In Windows XP to disable this power saving go to the Control Panel in your Start menu and double click on the icon named 'System' then click on the 'Hardware' tab then click on the 'Device Manager' button and scroll down until you see the 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' heading and expand the tree by clicking on the plus sign next to it. Scroll down and you will see one or more 'USB Root Hub' headings. Right click and select 'Properties' and select the 'Power Management' tab there you will see a check box that allows Windows to turn off the device to save power. Do this for each of the 'USB Root Hub' entries you see in your device manager.
