View Full Version : Can't use mapped mode in CH Mgr

Help! I'm trying to come up with a controller configuration that IL2 Forgotten Battles finds acceptable. I've got a number of controllers, including a Belkin Nostromo SpeedPad N50, and for some reason when it's plugged in I can't get IL2 to recognize my CH Pro Pedals. Thinking that I was just exceeding the number of controllers IL2 could accomodate, I thought I'd use the CH Control Manager (v.3.0) to join the throttle and pedals as one controller and map them as a single device. However, although I can make a map with both of them, the Mapped mode button in my Ctl Manager is grayed out. I've used Ctl Mgr for several years and don't recall ever having this problem before, but now it won't seem to go away. I even uninstalled and reinstalled everything, but no dice.
Here are my system specs:
AMD XP2800+ (2.08 GHz)
1GB PC2700 DDR RAM
Asus A7N8X Mobo
Radeon 9700 Pro (AGP)
Radeon 7200 (PCI)
ATI Catalyst 4.1 video drivers
Win XP Pro
DirectX 9.0b
Controllers:
CH Pro Throttle
CH Pro Pedals
Vmax Flight Systems (PFC) Yoke
Logitech Wingman Force USB Joystick
Nostromo N50 Speedpad
(All controllers are USB)
Thanks for any enlightenment that can be offered!

If just the "Mapped Mode" button is greyed, it's because you haven't downloaded a map for it to activate. That's true immediately after installation. Download the map and see if the button lights up.

Thanks for the reply Bob, but that's not the problem. I've got maps I've successfully used in Control Manager before, and ones I've made from scratch as well as downloaded maps. No matter which of them I load I don't get an active Mapped Mode button.
thanks,
Bill

Are you able to calibrate the controllers in the Control Manager?

Hi Bill,
I didn't mean to imply you had bad maps, Bill. Sorry if it came off that way. It's the lighting of the buttons that I was trying to get a handle on. If just the Mapped Mode button is greyed, then the Control Manager, for whatever reason, doesn't think you've downloaded a map. If the Off Mode and Direct Mode buttons are greyed, too, then the Control Manager isn't seeing any CH devices at all, which can happen in XP if you plug them in after the install. Michael's suggestion to try calibration from within the GUI (not from the Windows Control Panel) will cause it to rescan for new arrivals and that should light the buttons up again if they're all greyed. If you're going to do that, you should log in as an admin. If it finds new devices it's likely to run the New Hardware Wizard and you'll need priveleges.

Hi Michael,
Yes, I'm able to see and calibrate both the throttle and pedals from within the Control Manager. It's just that the mapped mode button remains grayed out.
thanks,
Bill

What are the controllers called in the Windows Control Panel under Game Controllers?
Are their names all upper case or mixed case?
If you open your Device Manager do you see anything that has a red X on it or maybe a yellow exclaimation mark?

No red "x" marks or yellow exclamations in device manager. The controllers are listed in my Windows Game Controllers panel as:
CH Pro Throttle USB
CH Pro Pedals USB
in exactly that case.

have you ever had another version of the Control Manager installed on this PC? Do you have all of the CH entries in the Device Manager like this...

Yes, my device manager looks like that. Everything seems to be where it should be. I have only had this version of Control Manager loaded on this machine.

Well now I feel like a complete idiot. I just tried loading and then actually downloading a map (I guess I misunderstood that terminology), and now everything is working fine. Turns out you can load and program all the maps you like, but if you don't download them they don't work! :luv: I'm able to map the throttle and pedals to one controller, and that does indeed solve my IL2 problem. Guess I need to read up on this version of Control Manager. Many thanks to you Michael for being so patient, and to everyone else who helped.
thanks,
Bill
